It’s that time again! Here is our weekend fishing report for the end of January 2020.

INSHORE FISHING:

It’s been colder than usual. And when the cold comes, the bite changes.

Captain Griffin Deans of Slot Machine Fishing Charters has been swinging more toward sheepshead, black drum as temperatures have cooled.   There have been some nice trout bites out there before the sun comes up early in the morning as well.

He’s still seeing nice-sized snook and redfish out there despite the colder temperatures and storm fronts.

We should have a little rain come this weekend but hope to see some better temperatures and more sunshine next week!

KAYAK FISHING:

When you’re kayak fishing, you fully expose yourself to the elements. Around this time of year, that includes cooler temperatures, brisk winds, and potential spits of rain. So what does that mean for a kayak fisherman? You’re going to need some gear.

Captain Erik Stevens from FishLikeUs.com recommends getting yourself some insulated water boots that will keep your feet warm despite their being wet. You’ll also want to consider wearing a wetsuit or some comparable gear that will keep you warm regardless of humidity and potential rain.

Because kayak fishing is not a quick form of transport, the only winds you’ll have to worry about are high winds and northerlies. High winds may make it tough to get where you’re going, so we suggest downloading an app or locating a resource that will inform you of wind predictions. You may also check in with the experts at your local bait shop for more information. *Please pay attention to your location and the direction of the wind to avoid getting in an undesirable situation.

Northerly winds will not necessarily take you off the water, but they may make you cold. Bringing a windbreaker and utilizing a face shield for warmth will help. You’ll also want to find a wind shadow for ease and comfort if it’s available.

Kayak fishing is yielding some large sheepshead and black drum in addition to consistent redfish this week, and we look forward to slightly warmer temperatures in the future!

OFFSHORE FISHING:

Anglers continue to report hogfish and tripletail offshore with a mix of mackerel and tuna chewing. You may still find cobia and Mahi on the surface, and experts suggest throwing a flat line for these fish.
