Here are three simple tips to help you succeed on the water this week:
3 Simple Adjustments for Success
1. Match Your Bait and Tackle to the Current
Dropping bait into deep water next to concrete pilings works best when your rig drops smoothly down the water column without spinning.

For Mangrove Snapper: Hook your pre-sorted Medium or Large live shrimp lightly through the horn or tail. Use a small split-shot or light knocker rig just heavy enough to keep the bait drifting near the concrete structure.

For Toothy Spanish Mackerel: Use a long-shank hook or thin wire leader with a live shrimp or small baitfish so sharp teeth don’t cut your line.
2. Time Your Trip with Moving Water
The Skyway area experiences strong tidal flow. During slack tide—when the water stops moving—gamefish slow down and rest in the shade of the pilings.

How to Fish It: Plan your setup so you are fishing during the middle hours of an incoming or outgoing tide when the current is steadily moving. 3. Avoid Line Glare and Sharp Barnacles
Bright summer sunlight shining through clear water can create a reflection off your leader line (known as “line flash”), which can cause observant fish to pass on the bait. In addition, Skyway bridge pilings are lined with razor-sharp barnacles.
