Drifting open grass beds in the middle of a hot summer day usually leads to an endless stream of pinfish bites. In high water temps, gamefish stay motionless in deep grass potholes surrounded by sand where water stays slightly cooler.

The Adjustment: Position your boat upcurrent from deep sand potholes. Pin a pre-sorted Medium live shrimp lightly through the horn on a light circle hook, and cast to the upcurrent lip of the pothole, letting the tide carry it naturally across the sand floor.
- You might wonder why I say medium shrimp. But those are still the most plentiful on the flats right now, and the fish are going to eat a medium shrimp the easiest. When you go up in size right now, they can still be more cautious just because there are so few of the larger baits. That means you are more likely to catch modest fish on big shrimp right now, and the biggest fish are more likely to eat a small or medium shrimp.
2. Time Your Drift with Tidal Velocity
When the tide stops moving during slack water, shallow flats heat up rapidly and oxygen levels drop. Gamefish retreat under thick mangrove overhangs or drop down into deep channels, ignoring baits presented in still water.
