Palmetto Skyway Bait | Weekend Fishing Report May 15

The Weekend Command Briefing

Based on the patterns from the last 7 days, the spring transition is in high gear. We’ve had a heavy north wind today, but that’s forecasted to lay down and flip South by Saturday, which is the perfect recipe for pushing water into the mangroves for the Crossweight Tournament. The Tarpon have officially moved into the bay in force, and the Snook are stacked up—just remember, it’s a sport-only bite for them now.

Before you head out to the tournament or the morning Tarpon hunt, stop by Skyway Bait. We’ve got the fresh dip nets Griffin mentioned, the state’s largest selection of frozen bait, and live pilchards ready to rock. Hit the taco stand midday to refuel—we’re right across from the Palmetto Point Dollar General.

Tournament-Grade Stealth

With a major tournament like the Crossweight happening, the pressure on the flats near Palmetto Point and Terra Ceia is going to be high. When the flats get crowded and the water is clear, you have to out-think the competition.

1. How to Catch: The Saturday South Wind Push

Saturday’s shift to a 12 mph South wind is a gift. It’s going to “pile” water onto the flats, allowing Redfish to reach the back-country oyster bars that have been too shallow all week.

  • The Tactical Fix: Focus on the “up-wind” shorelines where the water is being pushed into the mangroves. The bait will be naturally concentrated there. Use a live pilchard or a piece of cut ladyfish pinned against the roots.

  • The Palmetto Solution: Tournament pressure makes fish “leader-shy.” Use TrikFish Camo in 20lb test. It breaks up the silhouette better than clear fluoro when the sun is high, ensuring those schooled-up Reds don’t spook when your line crosses their window.

2. How to Catch: The Early Morning Tarpon Shadow

Tarpon are moving through the deeper troughs near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and the mouth of the Manatee River before the boat traffic picks up.

  • The Tactical Fix: You need to be on the water before the sun. Use a large shrimp or a live threadfin. Tarpon are sight-munching right now, so a natural presentation is everything.

  • The Palmetto Solution: Grab one of our new bait nets Griffin mentioned. Keeping your bait handled properly and lively is the difference between a roll and a hookup. We also have the heavy-duty TrikFish Camo shock leaders you need to survive that first jump near the bridge pilings.

3. How to Catch: The “Taco Stand” Midday Reset

When the bite slows down between tide shifts, don’t burn your gas searching. Pull into the shop, grab a fresh batch of bait, and hit the taco stand.

  • The Tactical Fix: Use our What’s the Flow tool during your lunch break. If the flow velocity is dropping, that’s your time to eat. When the tool shows the velocity ramping back up, that’s when you need to be back on your best Snook or Trout pothole.

  • The Palmetto Solution: We are right across from Palmetto Point, a few miles south of the Skyway. Use our What’s Bitin‘” AI tool while you eat your tacos to see where the most recent tournament-grade Reds have been reported.

Technical Briefing: Q&A

Why is the north wind today a problem for tomorrow? A strong north wind “blows the water out” of the bay. It takes a tide cycle or two for the water levels to normalize once the wind flips South. Saturday morning might still be a bit shallow, but by the afternoon, the water should be back in the grass.

What is the best net for catching shiners? Griffin just put out the new shiner nets. They feature a tighter mesh that prevents the bait from gilling themselves, which keeps them much livelier in your well.

Can I keep a Snook if I’m in the Crossweight Tournament? No. Snook are strictly CATCH AND RELEASE in the Tampa Bay region per FWC regulations until August 31. Any tournament entries will be photo-release only.

Where is the best place to find Tarpon this weekend? Check the deeper “lanes” near the Skyway shipping channel and the shadows of the bridge. They are moving with the bait pods on the incoming tide.

How do I find the shop from the water? We’re located just south of the Sunshine Skyway, right across from the Dollar General at Palmetto Point. If you’re coming by land, look for the taco truck—it’s the best landmark we’ve got! Plus, There’s even a boat sticking out of the ground!
