The “New Skyway Pier” Update
DeSantis’s announcement (SB 302) isn’t just about the pier; it’s about protecting the Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve from commercial dredging. For us, that means the grass flats and oyster bars we rely on are staying protected. The new pier construction will likely create a “new reef” effect. As they begin demolition and new pilings go in later this spring, expect the Grouper and Mangrove Snapper to congregate around the new structure.
Way to Lose #1: The Barometric Blindness
Most weekend warriors will head out Sunday morning and wonder why the fish have lockjaw. When that North wind kicks in and the pressure spikes after the front, the fish move deep and stay tight to structure.
-
The Palmetto Solution: Friday and Saturday morning, use Live Shrimp and Jumbo Threadfins (available by the pound). When the front hits Saturday night, switch to heavy-scented cut bait or Frozen Ladyfish pinned to the bottom. The fish won’t chase in the chop; you have to put it on their nose.
Way to Lose #2: The “Northeast Blow” (Safety & Positioning)
A 25-knot Northeast wind makes the open bay dangerous and the water turbid. If you try to fish the open flats of Terra Ceia, you’ll be fighting the anchor more than the fish.
-
The Palmetto Solution: Pivot to the lee side of Snead Island or the residential canals in Palmetto. We have the heavy 8lb to 10lb Anchor Leads and the TrikFish Camo leader (20lb) that can handle the abrasion of the barnacles when you’re forced to fish tight to the docks for cover.
Way to Lose #3: The “Flash” in the Clear-Before-Storm Water
Right before a front, the water often gets eerily clear. If you’re using clear leader, you’re glowing.
-
The Palmetto Solution: Use TrikFish Camo. As the clouds move in and the light changes, the Camo line adapts better than clear fluoro, which starts to “mirror” under overcast skies.
Technical Briefing: Q&A
When does the new Skyway Pier construction start? Demolition of unused portions begins later this spring. Expect temporary fishing platforms to keep the Manatee side accessible during the build.
How should I fish the “Pre-Front” window on Saturday morning? Aggressively. Use topwater plugs or large live shrimp. The fish know the pressure is dropping and will be on a feeding binge before the wind kicks up.
What is the best “Storm Shelter” spot in Palmetto? The backwaters of Terra Ceia Bayou or the protected canals behind Snead Island. These areas stay fishable even when the bay is white-capping.
Will the pier rebuild affect the current Kingfish run? Short-term, the noise might push them deeper, but long-term, the new structure will be a massive fish magnet. Stay tuned to our weekly reports for the “Construction Bite” updates.
What is the mandatory loadout for a rough-weather Sunday? Heavy egg sinkers (2oz+), 20lb TrikFish Camo, and plenty of fresh-frozen cut bait. If you’re staying in the canals, bring Live Shrimp for the Sheepshead and Black Drum that love the churned-up water.
