South Pier Closing

Last Weekend to Fish the Deep Waters of Tampa Bay Without a Boat

October 25–26 marks the end of an era. Florida State Parks has confirmed that, effective October 27, 2025, the south Skyway Fishing Pier will be partially shut down — and not just a small section. Access beyond the posted closure points will be off-limits following FDOT structural inspections. In plain English: about half of the south pier — including the long, deep-water stretch that serious anglers depend on — is closing indefinitely.

What That Really Means

This isn’t a routine repair or short-term restriction. The closure cuts off the only place left in Tampa Bay where you can fish true deep water without a boat. For decades, the end of the south pier has been where locals hauled in everything from king mackerel and cobia to snook, grouper, and tarpon. It’s also where generations came to watch ships pass at sunset, suspended between the Gulf and the bay.

Starting Monday, that’s over — at least for now. The gates will close, and the best of the deep-water access will go quiet until FDOT and Florida Parks decide what’s next. No timeline has been announced for reopening.

The Final Weekend

This weekend is your last chance to walk or fish the south pier all the way out. Expect it to be busy — and emotional. You’ll see regulars pulling out the heavy gear, families setting up lawn chairs, photographers chasing that last sunset from the middle of the bay. Everyone knows this stretch won’t be the same come Monday morning.

Bring live bait, heavy tackle, and a good attitude — the tides will be moving and the fish should be too. As always, you can stock up on bait and ice at Skyway Bait & Tackle before you head out. Search “bait shop near me” or “live bait near me” and you’ll find us right where we’ve always been — serving local anglers since before the pier even existed.

Still Open

The north Skyway Fishing Pier remains open, along with the entry section of the south pier closest to the bait shop. But the long run that reaches into the channel — the part that made it famous — is what’s being shut down.

Make It Count

Whether you’re chasing grouper, watching the freighters, or just soaking in one more sunset from the middle of Tampa Bay, this is it. After Sunday night, the view changes.

So grab your rods, grab your friends, and make this weekend one to remember. This isn’t just another closure — it’s the end of a piece of Florida fishing history.
