Spanish mackerel on moving tides, sheepshead around pier/bridge structure. Solid winter pattern holding strong.
Q: Spanish mackerel setup – bait, tackle, where?
Where: Outer pier ends during incoming/outgoing tides
Bait: Live shrimp (small/medium), live pinfish (2-3″), frozen cigar minnows, frozen squid strips
Tackle: #1/0-2/0 circle hooks, 20lb TrikFish leader, 1/2-1oz jigheads, Slayer Action Jigs, or free-line under popping cork, 7-8ft medium spinning rod, 15-20lb braid mainline
Rig: Free-line shrimp head-down or under Rattlesnake rigged float for surface action
Q: Sheepshead setup – bait, tackle, where?
Where: Barnacle-covered pilings, rock piles (south pier partially closed)
Bait: Sand FLeas, live shrimp (peeled tails), small barnacle scraps, shucked clams
Tackle: #1-1/0 J-hooks or knocker rigs, 15-25lb TrickFish leader, 1/4-1/2oz knocker sinker, 7ft light spinning rod, 10-15lb braid
Rig: Chicken rig with sand flea on bottom hook, shrimp on top—slow drag along structure
Q: Tide/wind tips?
Moving tides beat slack water. Wind kills surface mackerel bite—target mornings. Forums say first 2 hours of tide change = prime time.
