Nearshore Report: The Hard Bottom is Heating Up 3 3

Nearshore fishing is a game of precision, not power. We aren’t winching up monsters; we are outsmarting some of the pickiest eaters in the Gulf.

The Hogfish Strategy The Hogfish bite is steady in 20 to 35 feet of water. These fish don’t strike out of aggression; they’re foragers. If your presentation looks like a hardware store, they won’t touch it. This is why I preach TrikFish Camo Mono Leader. Everyone out there is still falling for the “fluorocarbon scam,” thinking it’s invisible. In our green Gulf water, that fluoro creates a fiber-optic glow that looks like a neon sign to a Hogfish. The Camo Mono breaks up the profile and lets that shrimp look natural.

Use a knocker rig or a specialized “Hog Ball” jig. Keep your lead as light as the current allows. If you can get away with 1/2 ounce, do it.

Mangrove Snapper & The Lane Grain Mixed in with the Hogs are some solid Mangroves and Lanes. They are holding tight to the relief. If you’re getting “machine gunned” by pins and grunts, you’re sitting on the wrong side of the ledge. You need to be upstream. Use our frozen threadfins—we have the largest selection of frozen bait in the state—and chunk them out to create a scent trail that draws the bigger Snapper away from the trash fish.

The Kingfish Scouts We are starting to see the first “Silver Bullets” (King Mackerel) showing up around the shipping channels. They are tracking the bait pods. Don’t waste your time with heavy wire yet; the water is still clear. A short piece of Slayer 40# cable or even just a heavy 40lb TrikFish leader will get you more bites than a heavy-duty rig.

Don’t forget to try the Bay Wolf Lures while they last! They were designed specifically for mackerel and Kings for Tampa Bay near shore fishing.

The Q&A: Technical Deep Dive

Q: “I’m marking fish on the bottom but they won’t commit. What am I doing wrong?” Captain’s Answer: You’re likely over-rigged. If you’re using 50lb braid and a heavy swivel, you’re creating too much “noise” in the water. Scale down to 15lb or 20lb main line and a long 20lb TrikFish Camo leader. Also, check your bait. If you’re using frozen shrimp that’s been freezer-burned, they won’t touch it. Come get a bag of our premium frozen shrimp; it makes a difference.

Q: “Is it worth running out to 50 miles right now?” Captain’s Answer: Only if you’re hunting Red Grouper or Scamp. The Red Grouper are sitting in that 80 to 120-foot range, and the bite has been solid on the full-day runs. But honestly, for the effort and fuel, the Hogfish and Mangrove bite in the 30-foot range is providing a better “meat-per-hour” return right now.
