The Deep Dive Blog: Strategy, Spots, and Gear
If you want to find success on the flats right now, you have to fish the “weather windows.” January fishing is all about water temperature and tide movement. Here is exactly how to target the big four this week:
The Species to Target
-
Spotted Seatrout: The “Gator” trout are in prime winter form. Look for them in 3 to 6 feet of water on the deep grass flats. On negative low tides, they will congregate in the deeper “potholes” (the white sandy spots in the grass).
-
Redfish: These guys are following the mullet schools. As the sun warms the shallow dark-bottom flats in the afternoon, the Reds move up to feed. Focus on the edges of mangrove lines and oyster bars.
-
Sheepshead & Black Drum: With the water temps dropping, these “structure lovers” are firing up. They are thick around residential docks, bridge pilings, and oyster reefs throughout the ICW.
-
Snook: While the season is closed for harvest, the catch-and-release action is great. They’ve retreated to the warmer backcountry creeks, rivers, and residential canals with deep water.
How to Catch Them For the Trout and Reds, stealth is key. Because the water is exceptionally clear this time of year, you need to downsize your leader. We recommend using a light fluorocarbon leader (15-20 lb) to keep your presentation natural.
For the Sheepshead, it’s all about the “vertical bite.” Use a small #1 or 1/0 circle hook with just enough weight to keep your bait pinned to the structure. Feel for that “tap-tap” and wait for the steady pressure before setting the hook.

Live Shrimp: This is the undisputed king of winter baits. Whether you’re fishing it under a popping cork for Trout or on a jig head for Reds, you need plenty of it. We are the premier #livebaitnearme source with fresh arrivals daily.
-
Frozen Specialty Baits: Sometimes the fish want a “scent” trail. We have the largest selection of frozen bait in the state, including frozen ladyfish, mullet, and squid—perfect for chunking for big Redfish or Black Drum.
-
Fiddler Crabs: If you’re targeting Sheepshead, these are like candy. Check our bins for the liveliest crabs in the area.
