Low Tide, Windy Front & Tons of Trout — Skyway Bait & Tackle Fishing Q&A

Low Tide, Windy Front & Tons of Trout — Fishing Q&A

Captain Griffin’s conditions update for Tampa Bay • Powered by Skyway Bait & Tackle

Conditions snapshot: Windy with a small front, super-low tide. Trout bite is strong. Snook along seawalls/bridges. Tarpon showing but picky. Shrimp is the top bait now and into the coming months.

Q: What’s biting right now?

Trout are thick and feeding even with the wind and falling pressure. We’re also seeing snook along seawalls and bridge lines. Tarpon are around, but they’re lockjaw in this front.

Q: What bait should I use on a windy, super-low tide?

Live shrimp is king when fronts start sliding through. It’s the most reliable inshore option over the next few months.

  • Simple split-shot shrimp rig: Nose-hook a shrimp, add a small split shot 12–18" up the leader, and reel slow.
  • Trout cork in skinny water: In shallower pockets, run a light float/trout cork to keep that shrimp up and visible.

Q: Where are the bites coming from?

Focus on seawalls with moving water and bridge structure that creates ambush points. On ultra-low tides, fish the nearest drop, potholes, and edges where bait has to funnel.

Q: How should I adjust my retrieve?

Slow it down. With a front and wind, fish are energy-conscious. A steady, slow reel on a shrimp gets the most trout right now. For snook, pause briefly near edges, seams, and shadow lines.

Q: Are tarpon eating?

They’re around but not very willing with this push of weather. Make a couple quality shots if you see rolling fish, then don’t force it—switch back to trout/snook to stay productive.

Q: When should I think nearshore—and for what?

Once the weather settles after these fronts, start planning nearshore hogfish trips. Keep an eye on seas and windows between blows.

Grab what you need before you go:

  • Live shrimp (plus pinfish when available), and a variety of frozen baits.
  • Split shot, light floats/trout corks, fluorocarbon leaders, and sharp 1/0 live-bait hooks.
  • Wind-friendly popping corks and jig heads for backup presentations.
