The Weekend Report: The Cold Front Pivot 3 13

We’ve been spoiled for a few weeks. The Snook have been snapping like it’s mid-May, but mother nature is about to remind us it’s still March. That East wind Griffin is talking about is a “drain plug” wind for Tampa Bay. It’s going to suck the water out of the flats and off the edges of the Skyway, forcing those fish into the deeper troughs and holes.

This weekend is your “Last Call” for the heavy Snook bite. Once that air temp hits the 50s next week, their metabolism is going to crater. If you’re hunting the flats or the pier this weekend, you’ve got to fish the low water. That means finding the “Slayer Logic” spots—the deeper pockets where the fish are huddled up waiting for the tide to return.

The Fix: From Snook to convict Fish

The Weekend Strategy (Snook & Reds) Since the water is dropping, you’re going to be fishing tighter windows. You need a presentation that doesn’t spook them in the shallows. Again, if you’re throwing that stiff, shiny fluorocarbon in low, clear water, you’re just practicing your casting. Use TrikFish camo mono. It lets your bait swim naturally in the skinny water.

I’ve got the Slayer Redi Rigs dialed in for this. They’ll keep your bait off the bottom just enough to avoid the snot grass but keep it right in the strike zone for a cruising Redfish.

The Week Ahead (Sheepshead & Snapper) When that temperature drops to 55, the Snook are going to get lockjaw. That’s when we switch to “convict fishing.” Sheepshead love the cold, and they love structure. But here’s the problem: Sheepshead are professional bait thieves. If your rig is too clunky, you won’t feel the bite until your hook is bare.

You need the Slayer Premium Fishing Tackle Chili Pepper Jigs. I designed these with a  a specific action to ensure you feel that “tick” before they crush the crab or shrimp. They also work well if the snapper are thick around the pilings.

The Frozen King: Stock Up for the Front

When the weather gets nasty and the wind is howling out of the North, catching live bait becomes a nightmare. Don’t waste your morning throwing a net in 20-knot winds. We have the largest selection of frozen bait in the state.

For the Sheepshead and Snapper bite next week:

  • Frozen Shrimp: Perfect for tipping jigs or using on our Sheepshead rigs.

  • Live Fiddler Crabs: The gold standard for convicts.

  • Cut Mullet: If you’re still chasing Reds in the low-water potholes this weekend, a fresh-frozen piece of mullet is hard to beat.

If you’re looking for a bait shop near me that actually has the inventory to back up the report, we’re open and the “taco stand” is ready.

Q&A: Navigating the Temperature Drop

Q: How does the East wind affect my spots at the Skyway Pier? A: An East wind blows against the tide on the Gulf side, which can get choppy, but more importantly, it pushes the bait offshore. You want to look for the “leeward” side of the pilings where the fish are hiding from the current and the wind. Use a heavier Slayer Rigged Float to keep your bait stationary in the wind.

Q: What bait should I use for Sheepshead when it hits 55 degrees? A: Shrimp is the go-to, but if the small Snapper are eating you out of house and home, switch to a tougher bait like a fiddler crab or a piece of oyster. Use our specialized terminal tackle to ensure your hook set is fast. Sheepshead don’t strike; they nibble, then crush.

Q: Is the Snook bite completely over next week? A: Not “over,” but it’s going to get much harder. They’ll head for the deep holes and bridge fenders where the water temp stays a bit more stable. If you’re determined to catch them, you’ll need to downsize your leader to TrikFish camo and slow your presentation way down.
