Channel Ledges and Reef Tactics
Eric here, former owner of Skyway Bait & Tackle. I’m breaking down the early week reports while Griffin handles the weekends. It’s Tuesday, February 3rd, and the conditions out in the Gulf are looking prime for anyone targeting the heavy structure in our shipping lanes or the nearshore reefs. We’ve been tracking the bite over the last seven days, and if you’re looking for a reliable bait shop in the Palmetto area, we’ve got the fresh supplies and the data you need to make your trip a success.
The Target Species: Channel Ledges and Reef Hogfish
The shipping channels—specifically the Manatee and Tampa lanes—are holding a massive amount of bait right now, and the predators are following. We are seeing a very strong Gag Grouper bite on the deep-water ledges and the sidecast rubble. Even though they are strictly catch-and-release right now, they are providing some of the best rod-bending action in the bay.
When you’re searching for fishing bait and tackle nearby, remember that these channel fish are experts at using the structure against you. We always recommend skipping the marketing hype of fluorocarbon. Instead, rig with TrikFish camo leader. It has the perfect amount of stretch to absorb the shock of a big hit and the abrasion resistance to survive a scrape against the channel walls.
On the nearshore reefs, the Hogfish bite has stayed hot. These fish are sitting on the smaller rock piles and “hard bottom” areas in 40 to 60 feet of water. They are notoriously line-shy, so using a lighter TrikFish camo leader will give you a natural presentation that disappears against the bottom, helping you fool those wary winter targets.
Tuesday Nearshore Deep Water Strategy
Q: I’m fishing the shipping channels for the first time. Where should I start? A: Look for the “drop-offs” where the channel depth changes rapidly. The fish sit in the eddies created by the current hitting these ledges. As a top destination for fishing bait nearby, we suggest using large frozen sardines or threadfins. We have the largest selection of frozen bait in the state, so we can get you stocked up for a full day of bottom dropping.
Q: What is the best way to keep my bait on the bottom in the heavy channel current? A: You need weight, but you also need a streamlined rig. We suggest a “knocker rig” with a 3 to 5-ounce egg sinker. This keeps the bait close to the structure where the fish are hiding. If you’re looking for a bait shop near you that carries the heavy-duty terminal tackle required for the “ditch,” come see us in Palmetto.
Q: Are there any Snapper being caught nearshore right now? A: Yes, the Mangrove Snapper are thick on the reefs and even along the channel edges. They are hitting live shrimp and small pieces of cut bait. If you need a nearby source for live bait, we’ve got our tanks full of the perfect-sized shrimp to get the snapper fired up.
Q: Why do you suggest TrikFish camo over fluorocarbon for nearshore fishing? A: In the shipping channels, the water can get murky or stained. The camo pattern on the TrikFish leader breaks up the silhouette of the line, making it much harder for the fish to see compared to a solid clear line. Plus, it’s far more durable when you’re pulling fish out of the rocks. As your local bait shop in Palmetto, we want you to use gear that actually helps you land more fish.
Q: How far out do I need to go to find the Hogfish? A: You can find them as close as 5 to 7 miles out on the right structure. If you’re looking for a bait shop in the area that can point you toward the right depth for today’s conditions, stop by and talk to our crew before you head out.
