Skyway Fishing Report 11 10

Q: How has the bite been this week at the Skyway Pier?

A: Cooler air and patchy rain early in the week have actually helped the bite. Water temps dipped into the high 60s, pushing baitfish back toward the structure, and the pier action picked up in spurts. Anglers putting in time, especially during incoming tides, found solid results on snapper, mackerel, and a few surprise catches.

Q: What’s been biting most consistently?

A:

  • Mangrove Snapper — still the steadiest catch of the week. Live shrimp and small greenbacks fished tight to the pilings are producing limits for patient anglers. The best bite is around dawn and dusk when the current slows.

  • Spanish Mackerel — showing strong early morning runs when bait schools push close. Silver spoons and Slayer’s white mackerel jigs are the ticket.

  • Pompano — spotted on the north pier with the stronger tides midweek; Slayer’s Chili Pepper Jigs in pink and chartreuse have been effective.

  • Sheepshead — starting to show up in better numbers along the concrete structure with barnacle scraping paying off, but don’t forget to try shucked clams!

  • Black Drum — a few caught at night on fresh-cut bait and shrimp around the light lines.

Q: Any reports of bigger fish?

A: Yes — a few cobia were sighted cruising the shadow lines midweek, mostly near the middle of the south pier, but they weren’t easy to coax. A couple of anglers also reported small tarpon rolling after sunset near the bridge lights, though most have moved south for warmer water. Some pier regulars picked up flounder near the rocks using soft plastics and shrimp-tipped jigs.

Q: What bait and tackle are working best?

A:

  • Live bait: Shrimp, greenbacks, and threadfins (when available).

  • Artificial: Silver spoons, Got-Cha plugs, and Slayer’s white mackerel jigs for macks and Slayer’s Chili Pepper Jigs for pompano.

  • Rigs: 20–30 lb leader and small hooks for snapper. Float rigs have been producing trout closer to the shallower end near the gate.

Q: What’s the forecast for the coming week?

A: With another mild front expected early next week, look for the bite to swing back to sheepshead and drum as water temps drop further. Mackerel may thin out, but snapper and pompano should stay strong through mid-month.
